Dryopteris Jurassic Gold at Chelsea

Just a quick post to let you know that our very own new fern, Dryopteris wallichiana Jurassic Gold, is being shown at Chelsea by Binny Plants

It won Best New Plant in the Nursery Stock section of the Four Oaks trade show last autumn and is an absolute cracker.

We named it Jurassic Gold due to our nursery being only a couple of miles inland from the Juassic Coast and ferns being from the Jurassic Period.

This is a cultivar of Dryopteris wallichiana. The new crosiers have black scales like its parent, but the young frond colour is a very bright golden orange. As the frond matures this fades to light green and is green throughout the winter in the south.

It grows to approximately 60-75 cms. tall and 45-60 cms. across.
As with the parent it is almost evergreen and flourishes in semi shade.

It should be hardy to minus 20 degrees C.

Currently retail availability is limited.

The RHS Wisley Plant Centre have some georgous 5 litre plants for sale, as do Holme For Garden who are a marvellous garden centre down the road from us near Wareham.

Going forward there are many thousands in the pipeline, some these should be available to the trade, from us in a 3 litre pot next spring.

So watch this space!

So if you are a retailer, please get in contact sooner rather than later as we have many booked already
